Summer Assignment Packet

You will be tested on the following material during the first week of school. The written work (printed bold) will be collected at the first class. If you need help please email Dr. Peachey at janet.peachey@dc.gov

I. Written theory
1.	Key signature review
2.	Scale degree exercise
3.	Interval worksheet
4.	Triad and 7th chord review
5.	Roman numeral chord analysis: My Country ‘Tis of Thee

II. Ear training
1.	Melodic Dictation exercises
2.	Interval and chord recognition exercises on www.musictheory.net or www.teoria.com.

III. Singing
1.	Scales on solfege syllables: major and 3 forms of the minor, ascending and descending.
2.	Diatonic triads in major and minor keys
3.	Major and minor triad inversions
4.	Chromatic scale, ascending and descending
5.	Intervals within the chromatic scale, ascending and descending
6.	Sight-Singing melodies: #206-210 and 232-235

IV. Keyboard
1.	Scales: major and 3 forms of the minor to 4 sharps and flats
2.	4 types of triads on every key
3.	5 types of 7th chords in every key
4.	(for piano majors; optional for others): chord progressions: I-V-I and I-IV-V-I in C, D, E, F, G, and A major and minor

V. Rhythm
	Count and clap simple and compound rhythms on sheet.

NOTE: In order to succeed in AP Theory, you must know all key signatures thoroughly, both major and minor. Understanding how to figure them out is not enough. We will not spend time on key signatures in the AP Theory class. If you need practice, you can do key signature drills at www.musictheory.net under Trainers: Key Trainer.
